Chris Quilty & Chad Holbert Win Rain Shortened Best-Ball

Verona, NY - The dynamic duo of Chris Quilty (Tuscarora GC, left) and Chad Holbert (Oswego CC) captured the 2019 SDGA Best-Ball in extended play after besting Dan Gaulin and Matt Clarke (Cazenovia CC) in a one-hole playoff at Turning Stone Resort Casino's Kaluhyat Golf Course.

The full field of 100 players never saw the course on Friday, as the first round at Shenendoah was canceled due to torrential rains. The 36 hole event was shortened to 18 holes.

The weather improved Saturday and play began at 8:30am. The course, while in terrific condition, was soaked and required cart paths only and lift, clean and place in the general area. This coupled with an extremely difficult layout not only tested players but also made for a long day on the course.

There were three groups that finished the day with a tie of the lead at 1-under 71: Quilty/Holbert, Gaulin/Clarke, and Cronin/Breuer. When the playoff was announced, the team of Doug Cronin and Charlie Breuer (Onondaga GCC) were not available so play went on.

The tie needed to be resolved in a sudden-death format, with Quilty and Holbert squaring off against Gaulin and Clarke. The drama was short lived though, and Quilty and Holbert won on that first playoff hole with a par.

Brad Monroe (Lake Shore) and Kevin Vandenberg (Tuscarora), the defending champions, narrowly missed a chance to join the playoff, finishing at even-par 72.
