The two John’s got off to a solid start in the first round birding the second hole and the third, a par 3. The put added another two to the scorecard with a birdie on the par 3 eighth. They went on to birdie twice more with only one bogey for a round of four-under, 68. After day one the duo trailed to Luke Hobika and Jack Weinerth, who shot five-under, and was tied for second with two other teams.
In the second round, Woodruff and Wessels couldn’t close the gap early on. After a bogey on hole 1 they couldn’t manage anything better than par on the front-nine and trailed by three strokes at the turn.
The birdie train started rolling, crucially, for them on hole 13 where Wessels scored a three on the par 4. Woodruff responded with two consecutive birdies on 15 and 16 to get to six-under, one-off the lead. On 17, both the leaders and the Wessels-Woodruff team made bogey as the lead went back down to six-under. On the final hole, Wessels made a birdie to send his team to a playoff with Anthony Villanti and John Migliore as well as Joe Petrin and Greg Perry.
With the playoff conducted on the first hole, John Woodruff drained a birdie putt from off the green. It ended up deciding the tournament as none of the other teams could match birdie, and Woodruff and Wessels became Senior Best-Ball champions.
Skenandoa Club duo Villanti and Migliore tied for second place with Petrin (NYSGA eClub - Central NY) and Perry (Onondaga Golf & Country Club). Hobika (Yahnundasis Golf Club) and Weinerth (Highland Park Golf Club) finished in fourth place. Bernie Beck (Cavalry Club) and Patrick Dailey (Tuscarora Golf Club) took home fifth place.
