Former SDGA President James Coleman Passes Away at 94



The SDGA lost James P. Coleman, who passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022. He was 94 years old.


Jim was a past president of the Syracuse District Golf Association and former executive committee member of the New York State Golf Association. He continued to serve as captain of the SDGA Mitchell Cup team through 2019.


He was a member of the Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club for many years and was still enjoying playing the game at Links of Erie Village up until just last year.


He spent his life in the Syracuse area, graduating form Central High School and Syracuse University.


Jim carried on the family floral business tradition until his retirement in 1990. Coleman florist was originally founded by his grandfather George Phillips, then run by his parents, and is presently operated by Peter and Joan Coleman.


In recent weeks, Jim was still enjoying gardening and growing his own flowers at home.


He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Charlotte, along with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.


Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 2-4pm at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd East, Dewitt. Services will be private on Thursday followed by interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
