Nick Bove Holds Early Lead at Gerry Ashe Memorial

Nick Bove

Nick Bove (NYSGA eClub - Central NY) was one of two players to break par on Friday at Timber Banks Golf Club in the opening round of the 2025 Gerry Ashe Memorial.

The former Le Moyne College golfer undoubtedly produced the cleanest scorecard over the first 18 holes, with a bogey-free 68 that included four birdies. He bookended his front-nine with birdies on No. 1 (one of six logged on that hole for the day amongst the 80-player field) and No. 9.

Bove, who’s finished top-10 in each of the last three years of this championship, carded his last two red numbers on holes 14 and 17 to round out an impressive 68 and put himself three shots clear of the nearest competitor.

Mitchell Archer (Drumlins Golf Club) took a different route to his under-par round, with four birdies against three bogeys for an overall score of one-under. A bogey on the seventh hole followed six straight pars to start, but the reigning NE10 Player of the Year responded with a stretch of three consecutive birdies on holes 9-11 to build momentum towards the top of the leaderboard.

After a bogey on 14, Archer erased it with a birdie on the par-3 16th - one of five across the field - before ending his round with a bogey on the 18th, which ranked as the hardest hole of the day with the same amount of pars (29) as birdies and the most double-bogeys (11) of any hole. He sits in second place with 36 holes remaining.

Jared Greczyn (Cazenovia Country Club) came in at even-par, sitting at solo third. A quintet of golfers finished at one-over to hold a share of fourth place: Ben Gaulin (Cazenovia Country Club), Joel Jakubowicz (Yahnundasis Golf Club), Spencer Baum (Wa-Noa Golf Club), Doug DeCarlo (Drumlins Golf Club) and Josh Schoonmaker (Tuscarora Golf Club).

The field was cut to the low 50 players and ties after round one. At the conclusion of round two, the field will be cut again to the low 32 players and ties ahead of Sunday’s final round.

The winner of this championship will earn an exemption into the New York State Men’s Amateur Championship at Yahnundasis Golf Club on July 8-10.
