SDGA Claims Second Mitchell Cup in Three Years

In the annual battle of professionals versus amateurs, the Syracuse District Golf Association amateurs defeated the Central New York PGA professionals by a score of 29 to 19 to take home its second Mitchell Cup in three years on Sunday at Onondaga Golf & Country Club.


In the Modified Alternate Shot morning round, the SDGA won four of six matches while earning another point with a split to jump out to an early 9-3 lead. The sides of Doug DeCarlo/Jim Hirsch, Brett Cunningham/Mitchell Weigand, Brad Monroe/Dan Young, and Ben Gaulin/Adam Butch won their respective matches, while Spencer Baum and Dean Hitt split. 

The SDGA amateurs continued their strong play into the afternoon four-ball matches, winning three by scores of 5-1 (Doug DeCarlo/Jim Hirsch), 6-0 (Spencer Baum/Dean Hitt) and 5-1 (Ben Gaulin/Adam Butch). Nick Bove and Johnny Gruninger, despite losing 4-2, earned a couple of points for their team, as did Brad Monroe and Dan Young, who finished in the same fashion. 


The SDGA team consisted of Jim Hirsh, Brett Cunningham, Adam Butch, Johnny Gruninger, Spencer Baum, Nick Bove, Ben Gaulin, Brad Monroe, Doug DeCarlo, Mitchell Weigand, Dan Young and Dean Hitt. 


The CNYPGA was represented by Joey Tesori, Dennis Colligan, Eric Manning, Jeff Reader, Mark Tucker, Trey Walewski, Tim Hume, Alan Savage, Robert Larsen, Michael Berger, Nick Serafino, and Matt Jaynes. 


The Mitchell Cup is named in honor of William Mitchell, the former head pro at Onondaga Golf & Country Club. The CNYPGA leads the all time series 32-19-1.
