Johnny Gruninger Leads Player of the Year Winners
The 2020 season has been completed and the SDGA Player of the Year Awards have been finalized. Bellevue's Johnny Gruninger's captured the Men's and Juniors POY awards with a historic season that included wins at the SDGA Gerry Ashe Memorial and District Match Play Championships, and the SDGA Junior Match Play Championship. He became the first player in Syracuse history to win these three titles and just the sixth to win the Ashe and Match Play in the same year. He edged out second place finisher Brad Monroe by just 12 points.

Mike George of Timber Banks earned POY honors for Syracuse Senior's, topping Tuscarora's Tom Fletcher by 230 points. George's season included a win at the SDGA Senior Stroke Play Championship
The Super Senior POY was won by Rick Jones of Drumlins CC, who finished just 25 points ahead of Bellevue's Randy Young. Jones won the SDGA Super Senior Stroke Play Championship.
The Boys' Junior POY, for golfers 14 and younger, was won by Drumlin's Jackson Saroney.
The SDGA Golfer of the Year was awarded to Andrew Hickey of the New York State Golf Association for his support of amateur golf locally and statewide, his mentorship of the P.J. Boatwright Interns, and his work on the SDGA Board of Directors.
The SDGA would like to thank this year's interns, Dan Mort of Liverpool and Matt Whaley of East Syracuse, for their tireless efforts in conducting the association's championships. Their work in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic was a key piece to the success of the 2020 season. We wish them luck as they take their next steps in their careers.
