SDGA Edges Out CNY PGA To Win 36th Sovik Cup


The SDGA amateurs squeezed out a narrow victory against the CNYPGA professionals, 15 1/2 to 14 1/2 in the 36th Sovik Cup hosted by The Pompey Club on September 29th. The 12 man team is selected from the Top 8 overall point leaders from the Senior Points List and top-4 overall points leaders from the Super Senior Points List.


The Syracuse District team consisted of Chris Smithers (Tuscarora GC), Tim Scheemaker (Beaver Meadows GC), Jack Weinerth (Highland Park GC), John Harrington (Tuscarora GC), David Smith (Tuscarora GC), Mike Naton (Tuscarora GC), David Hicks (Cornell University GC), Don McClure, Todd Dischinger (Foxfire GC), Randy Young (Bellevue CC), Don Van Gorder (Newman Municipal GC) and Richard Volcko (Beaver Meadows GC).


Representing the CNY PGA this year was Trey Walewski (Meadowbrook GC), Mark Tucker (Cazenovia CC), Stan Gorman (Pompey Club), Steve Campanaro (Teugega CC), Alan Savage (Turning Stone), Marcus Bernardo (Walden Oaks CC), Rob Phelps (Vesper Hills), Scott Webster (Tuscarora GC), Tony Saraceno (Genegantslet GC), Robert Marton (Calvary Club), Stan Lisk and Jack Conger (Links at Erie Village).


The Sovik Cup is in honor of Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Famer Larry Sovik, who won six Syracuse District Amateur Championships in his career.


Special thanks to The Pompey Club for hosting this year's event on short notice, which moved from the typical host Tuscarora due to rain and unplayable conditions.
